Becoming Licensed

Internal practitioners and sustainability consultants can both become licensed to use SCORE. You need to have a strong understanding of sustainability principles and practices, along with experience implementing sustainability in organizations.

"I loved this course. You are a really wonderful instructor. You have such an amazing command of the subject matter, yet you are always open to new ideas and are so encouraging to all of your students. You created the perfect learning environment for us and I thank you very much.

I also liked the fact that we were scattered all over the globe and able to meet live on Mondays and to share our thoughts and conversations in the forums during the week (at any hour!) I would not have been able to travel to take this course and having it available as a web based course worked out so perfectly for me. It was really a lot of fun and you did an excellent job of keeping the conversation active and engaging by reading the chat box and responding to the group. I know you couldn't hear us, but I was laughing and talking out loud to the computer : ) It was great to have the sessions recorded too, in case you missed one or want to go back to review something." — Mary Emerson, Northeastern Utilities, 2011 Licensee Training

There are four ways to become licensed to implement SCORE:

Note that prospective assessors must possess a strong working knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices as this is necessary for proper use of SCORE.

Want to become a licensed SCORE assessor? Licensing is for internal sustainability professionals or external consultants, people already well-versed in sustainability concepts and practices. (Quick self-test—You should know what these abbreviations mean: GRI, TNS, ISO-14001, EMS, LEED, SA-8000). The distance learning class involves a weekly webinar and then several hours of additional work each week for 4 weeks.

"I recently conducted my first assessment.  It was great.  From a business standpoint, I more than made up for the training in the assessment fees to just one client alone, and I'm currently working on a proposal to help them follow through that could bring in thousands of dollars.  The results I got back from Darcy were super fast and the report was insightful and very useful in helping me frame the "next steps" part of my future contract.

Besides the cash side, I'm really excited about SCORE.  Because of how it is structured it is easy to understand, and you get to "trick" clients into having a meaningful internal conversation about sustainability that probably wouldn't have happened on their own.  The hard data results are one thing (great metric to improve upon), but the energy and commitment that folks get from the process is the real value of SCORE.

I would highly recommend SCORE to anyone who is serious about helping clients advance their sustainability goals.  Not only does it provide a benchmark of where they're at today, it is the catalyst for meaningful discussion about where they want to go tomorrow."
